Answering The Interview Question: Why Should We Hire You?

How many people have been asked this question at an interview before? Most of you probably have; and while you might just want to say “because I need a job,” that’s definitely something you’ll want to avoid saying!

Here are 5 mistakes to avoid when answering this question:

  • Don’t try to memorize your answer: Make your response as natural and conversational as possible. A rehearsed answer can come across as insincere.
  • Don’t just repeat what’s already in your resume: Use this opportunity to provide additional insights about your background and how it relates to the job.
  • Avoid answers that are too short and generic: Provide a thoughtful and specific response that shows your genuine interest and understanding of the role.
  • Avoid talking too much: Keep your answer concise and to the point. Rambling can dilute the impact of your message.
  • Avoid sounding arrogant: Confidence is key, but make sure your answer reflects humility and a willingness to learn and grow.

Instead, keep the following in mind:

  • Be objective and answer with confidence: Clearly articulate why you are interested in the role and how your background makes you a strong candidate.
  • If you have real-life examples, use them: Sharing specific examples can help illustrate your skills and experiences in a relatable way.
  • Highlight how your skills and experience fit the job requirements: Connect the dots between your background and the job description to show that you’re a great match.
  • Show what makes you unique and valuable: Emphasize any unique skills or experiences that set you apart from other candidates.
  • Be specific: Tailor your answer to the specific job and company, demonstrating that you’ve done your homework and are genuinely interested.

Remember that your answer needs to set you apart from other candidates and show that you’re the best fit for that job. If you don’t have much in the way of experience, highlight the strengths you have that are relevant. If you do have the experience, don’t be shy about it. It’s your time to shine!
